It looks like the best approach is to use:
ContextCompat.getColor(context, R.color.color_name)
eg:
yourView.setBackgroundColor(ContextCompat.getColor(applicationContext,
R.color.colorAccent))
This will choose the Marshmallow two parameter method or the pre-Marshmallow method appropriately.
