How to validate an email address in PHP

I have this function to validate an email addresses:

function validateEMAIL($EMAIL) {
    $v = "/[a-zA-Z0-9_-.+]+@[a-zA-Z0-9-]+.[a-zA-Z]+/";

    return (bool)preg_match($v, $EMAIL);
}

Is this okay for checking if the email address is valid or not?
