prevent wordpress from creating thumbnails of an image

Check out @Otto’s plugin Dynamic Image Resizer. I think it does exactly what you’re asking for.

I haven’t used it before, so I can’t vouch for it, but the plugin author’s identity goes a long way toward me trusting it.
