Fields added by S2Member are probably stored in wp_usermeta, while BP’s member search searches over data stored in BP’s xprofile tables. bp_current_component() does not necessarily return a boolean – it returns false if not in a BP component, but will return the name of the component otherwise, as a string. Internally, BP uses the function bp_is_blog_page() to do what you’re asking – if it returns true, it’s not a BP page.
From my understanding, these are produced by the function bbp_list_forums(), as called in the template file bbpress/loop-single-forum.php. It’s likely that it will not be as easy as adding something small to make it work. Plugins like WP-Postratings store their data on a post-by-post basis. But BP members are not posts. not really sure what your point, but you can use body class to customize background images ( AFAIK twitter use this method too ). for example if you have two user : x and y you can customize the author page : yoursite.com/author/x yoursite.com/author/y with css like these .author-x {background:red} .author-y {background:blue}
