To search through the category, I think you would want to use get_posts to fetch all the posts in the particular category and then go through them with a for loop and check the custom value in each one and then echo the appropriate items to a results page.
There is the built in post thumbnail. WordPress will keep track of it and you can use the_post_thumbnail to display wherever needed.

You have to call wp_reset_postdata() after rg_get_social_pic_of_the_week(). it runs its own query which is polluting the global $post variable that other functions rely on.
