I think I found the most semantic solution: If I want to relate a given row of data to “nowhere”, NULL is the best value to reflect that. And it even works with constraints on the field!

Users don’t have direct access to the database, so in a sense your question doesn’t make sense. I found it is coming from wp-content/themes/Divi/page-template-blank.php, which is my parent template. I concluded the mutable handwaving of wp_query was confusing the template and, after a search, found this neat flowchart letting me know I should call wp_reset_query. That fixed it.

Use get_option() instead. The get_option() method returns an option for the current blog. In single site installation, the current blog is the only blog. So get get_option() returns the option for it.
