LESS happens as a preprocessor and doesn’t render dynamically each time your page loads. So, you write your LESS, compile it to CSS, and then load the CSS in your pages. Error messages generated in ‘Customize Your Site’
My guess would be that is_admin() is conditional check specific to wp-admin and because the customizer doesn’t actual have capability of displaying in wp-admin it would hide the controls.
I found the answer here: https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/customizer-api/ Using ‘transport’ => ‘postMessage’ in my fields settings array. Kirki also provides passing this option too.
