Post meta data are for posts only. You should not create a new post type to use custom options. There is a dedicated Options API for that use case. Create an options page and let the user update the option there.
Replace the_field with get_field. The former echoes data without the need to explicitly call echo on the function name, the latter returns data, which is what you need when storing data against a variable for later use in your function.
