This has now been solved. It was a case of fixing the http error I was getting with the flash uploader. It then gives you the select button rather than the insert into post.

It turns out WP got confused because i used the settings> medias screen to also set the “medium” dimensions to 670×290. This redundance seems to disable entirely both the “medium” and the “listing-post-thumbnail” dimensions. What does Firebug or Chrome Developer Tools report on the rendered background image URL? Does it return a 404? Try changing this: style=”background-image:url(/wp-content/plugins/xxxxxxwidget/image2.png) to this: style=”background-image:url(<?php echo wp_plugins_dir(); ?>/xxxxxxwidget/image2.png)
your site domain uses the www, but your images are all with paths http://aviewtoathrill.net (no www.). they are all returning 403 forbidden status codes, so my guess is that you have some sort of hotlink protection that is preventing your site from loading its own images due to this mismatch. I use Easy Fancybox. It has a number of great features that allows for auto-detection of image files, and fancybox allows for HTML or inline, which is what you are looking for. It also allows for it to automatically popup, just attached the fancybox-auto class
