Single installation with sub-domains for admin and separate domains for sites

First, as you already said, you will need to activate multisite. To do so in your wp-config.php file just before the line that says: /* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */ add define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true ); and then in the WordPress admin, go to Tools >Network Setup then follow the steps to finish installing multisite. Then use this plugin to map the domin names: WordPress MU Domain Mapping
